The Significance of Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day (14th February) is a special and popular day for everyone especially lovers, who take the opportunity to celebrate and concretize their love for each other. The significance of the celebration is already embedded in the history of Valentine’s Day celebration. Obviously, love is usually felt in the air as everyone works hard to connect with their loved ones on that day.

Origin of Valentine’s Day: St. Valentine and the Lupercalia

The entire celebration takes its name from St. Valentine who was regarded as a legend due to his apostolate to couples. In Rome, when Claudius II was the emperor, the law was passed that young men should stop getting because single men made better soldiers than married men. St. Valentine saw injustice in this and defied the order of the emperor by wedding young lovers in secret. He was sentenced to death by the emperor on the 14th of February and the day has remained the day for young lovers to remember their hero.

There are many other stories that are used to explain the story of Valentine’s day. Sometimes credit is given to St. Valentine of Terni who was a bishop and was also beheaded by Claudius II. Some attribute the event to the young valentine who helped Christians to escape harsh prisons. He was later imprisoned and wrote the first valentine greetings after falling in love with a lady. He wrote “ From your Valentine,..” and that expression has remained common till this day.

Valentine’s day is attributed to the pagan festival of Lupercalia that takes place at the ides of February. This festival is a fertility festival dedicated to the god of Agriculture_ Faunus. Some people believe that the date was chosen by Christians to completely replace the pagan festival which was popular at the time.

Valentine’s day signifies love, interconnectedness, oneness and unity. This is why it is common to offer gifts on valentine’s day to loved ones.
