What do you think is the difference between amateurs and professionals in the same field? I would argue time and again that it is experience. Without disregard to talents, luck and other accidentals that may suddenly place people ahead, I strongly believe that there is a certain level of mastery that only comes from experience.
Take some time to think about your experience in certain skills we can consider minor. Things like driving, typing, riding a bicycle, learning a language etc. You will definitely discover that experience plays an important role in pushing you from an amateur to advancement in that particular field. This can also be said of major fields in life.
It is true that when we talk of experience, we also talk about the time required to gain the experience. That is the reason for this article. To remind you that there are shortcuts to gaining experience. I was listening to a speech by Jim Rohn in which he said “One way to learn is from your own experiences but another way to learn is from other people’s experiences.” He went on to say that “One book can save you five years, if you read it.”
This may sound all unreal but let us pay attention to the fact that different books have been written in different fields of life. Whatever you want to learn, there is a book available to give you the required knowledge. In the aforementioned speech, Jim Rohn emphasized that “Hundreds of successful people have written down their stories in books and they wrote down how they did it.”
What I want you to understand in this post is that books are like experiences that have been piled up waiting for us to take them in, just by reading them. We can become masters in our various fields just by reading. If there is someone in history that has achieved things you align with, read books on how they did it and what they did exactly. You will be building up experiences that will push you towards mastery.
Last month, I spent more time reading books, books of different genres and I must say, it was an awesome experience. I came out from each reading session feeling wiser, smarter, advanced, almost like one who has entered a new level in a game play. I now understand that I can save myself years and years of field experience by reading for a few hours.
In this new month of August 2022, I challenge you all, my friends, to put reading into your weekly schedule. In this way, you can become masters in whatever you wish in a relatively short time. On a personal note, I wish to increase my reading time in this new month. If you want to join me, perhaps we could do combined reading where we pick up books, give a timeframe for completion and discuss the lessons learnt thereafter. Send a message if you will love to join me in this.
Happy New Month of August, 2022.
