If you’re reading this post, chances are that you are a lover of music, a singer, a pianist or at least you’ve attended a concert physically or online. We all can’t deny the connection we feel with music. Either way, music surrounds us even though people resonate with different genres based on their personalities.
The focus today is on classical music which is of course the most celebrated genre as the word ‘classical’ connotes. If you’ve ever watched an opera, you’ll realize how there is meaning behind the action and spoken words. Music has a way of revealing a lot more and that is the aim of this post. Together, we shall discover that classical music performance photos contain more details than we would have thought.
You are the Music
How did the piano ever come about? What was the inventor thinking that led to the creation of the piano? Well, just like you, I don’t know too. I can only say that he did a real good job. Of course, who doesn’t love the soothing sounds of the piano? The picture challenges the importance of the piano. If you observe carefully, you’ll notice that the music is coming from the man and not the piano.
Funny right? Of course, it may sound ridiculous at the moment. Give it some thought and boom, you’ll make the greatest discoveries in music. The piano is secondary, the real shit is going on in his head. The man is the music, you are the music. Without the knowledge of the piano and musical coordination, he wouldn’t be able to produce something pleasant. Educational right?
Smiles are contagious
The first attractive thing in the picture here is the heartfelt smile coming from these violinists. They don’t seem nervous as people who are about to perform on stage. Perhaps they know their craft so well that they no longer have fears. That could be true or not. Even though the smile is a symbol of confidence it goes way beyond that.
There are four people on stage and each one of them is holding an instrument that differs slightly. At least we can tell from the difference in sizes, perhaps you missed that too. This may be revealing to us that each of these men only has to play a simple part to contribute to the overall outcome of the performance. With three people by your side, why wouldn’t your confidence be as high as Chopins’ Sonata?
Seeing through the musician’s eyes
What would it be like to see things through the eyes of a musician? You don’t need to ask further, the picture perfectly answers your question. All is musical. Remember what you were taught in science class about central and peripheral vision? The engulfing book in the picture represents the musician’s peripheral vision, while the instrument represents his central vision.
As funny as it sounds, I don’t think this picture is misleading in any way. What does it take to know so much about something clandestine as musical theories? A lot of concentration and effort right? That explains why either way, musicians are seeing music all around them. Did you try reading the musical notes from the book? Oh, I’m not alone. I wouldn’t try either.
The art in Music and Music in Art
What a piece of art, one might say. What musical finesse, another might say too. Undoubtedly, we cannot deny the artistic nature of the lady with a violin. No wonder people say that music is art. What makes more sense to you in the picture? The musical part or the work of art? Whatever be the case, the desire to absorb it is compelling.
I think we are missing something. What is the lady staring at? I feel the musical production is a means of recreating her environment. She is acting like one who is watching her actions from a distance. Perhaps there is more to the violin she is playing and the artist just didn’t want us to see what was happening some metres away.
Behind the Scenes
At first, I couldn’t make anything out of this picture till I saw the drinks on the other side. Those who are taking the drinks don’t know the source of the entertainment. They are gaining listening pleasure and consuming the food and drinks as well. Those who are producing the music are in the dark. Is that intentional or are they banned from the main party?
I feel it is intentional because they seem comfortable in their position. The level of focus on their instruments makes you think they are actually enjoying a lot more than those in the main event. Would you rather be with them or with the rest of the people? I already made my decision, darkness all the way. See you after the event.
Music is a weapon_what?
The picture reminds me of the movies we watched as kids. Movies of Spartan soldiers raising their swords after defeating the Athenians. The silhouettes made the victory so special even for those who never participated in the war. Do you know why soldiers raise their swords after a victory? Alright, I’ll tell you a secret. They are exalting their swords as the main agents of their victory. What a thrill!
Something must be wrong with this picture then. These guys are raising their musical instruments instead of swords. Whom did they conquer with those instruments? Could music be their weapon? What kind of fight would require string instruments. Perhaps we have to continue pondering since neither I nor you have the answers or do you?
Breakthrough or get deep
Is it just me or is anyone seeing the two sides of the photo as myself. The background appears to be a shattering glass and splashing water all at once. This raises the question of whether she is getting in or getting out. It would have been an easy choice if music was that simple. I know that music can cause a breakthrough and it can also help one get deep into things.
Some time ago, I had to force myself to leave the house just to avoid the temptation to play one more song on the piano. Although it was interesting, I knew I was getting comfortable in solitude and I had to stop myself from getting deep in the act. She doesn’t look sad and for that, I would say that the music is liberating her from the substance engulfing her.
The light leads the willing fingers as the teacher does the willing student
From looking at the picture, we cannot guess if those fingers are professional or amateur on the piano. That is because professionalism is not written on the fingers that possess it, rather, it is discovered during performances. However, the simplicity of the finger placement in the picture shows the early stages of any beginner on the piano.
What do you think the light in the picture signifies? They are there to direct the learner through the path of acquiring the skill. Whoever desires sincerely will surely learn because when the student is ready, the teacher appears. Even if you are born with the brain of Handel, you still need to develop your finger muscle memory to perform magnificently.
A unique stance understood by a few
No, it’s not a magical performance down there, and it’s not a magic wand. Music has a close relationship with all other areas of life. Although they’re all musicians in that picture, you could visualize a preacher, a dancer, a magician and so on. This also suggests that musicians are from diverse fields of life and not limited to any group.
The different postures displayed in the picture are unique and we are not confronted daily with the sight of such. Ever wondered how they are able to communicate distinctly with the different instruments at the orchestra. This marvellous encounter makes clear the affinity between musicians. To be part of them, you need to get your black suit and a white shirt ready. Don’t forget to take your wand along with you.
Man comes to illumine
Just as the light is bringing life to the positions where they lay, so also do the fingers of the pianist come to produce the best of sounds. The twisted lightings represent the rigorous process that characterizes piano learning and the challenges in the life of the musician who strives for the perfection of his art.
Whenever you see anyone sitting on the piano, remember this picture and discover the connection between his fingers and the sounds produced. I used to be afraid of coming close to the piano, lest someone confused me to be a professional player. As the years passed, I discovered that no one really cared and the effort to come close to the piano would be the start of my career as a professional pianist.
Wow, these pictures are really inspiring… It breaks down seeming mysteries of music to the common man and spurs wonders in the souls of those who doubt the power of music…
